Pros and Cons of an All-in-One Solution

April 04, 2016

Category: General

In an excellent and concise white paper entitled "Best-of-Breed vs All-in-One Solutions", Eric Camulli of Virtual Hold Technology outlines the critical strategic and practical differences between the two types of technology approaches.

Here is a quick recap of the Pros and Cons of an All-in-One Technology solution:

 Pros

 Cons

  • Convenience
  • Covers the basics
  • Value / bundle-based pricing
  • Simplicity of single-vendor relationship
  • Lacks modifiability and flexibility
  • Typically only contains a subset of possible functionality
  • Interdependence of each element -  a single point of failure can take the whole system offline
  • Not necessarily fully integrated as most bundled solutions grow by acquisition
  • May not have the capabilities to adapt if  your business needs change
  • No correlation between single vendor and better service
  • Only one route of escalation of problems
  • Lack integrations expertise, restricting your options for other technologies

Camulli recommends an 80/20 strategy as the “best of both worlds” and lays out his argument as to why.  It’s a good, quick read, and one we recommend. Click here to read the two-page report
