New Functionality: MICR / Check Reading

August 26, 2016

Category: General

We recently added new functionality to our Document Management and Process Management Platforms that allows for check reading and data extraction.

Standard OCR engines (including Medforce's) don't read scanned routing and bank information text very well. Also known as Magnetic Ink Character Recognition or MICR (prounounced Mick-er), that part of the check can be read by special scanners that use the actual properties of the ink to determine the letters and number of the check identifier. These MICR characters are written in a specific font that aids these bank teller machines, but when the check is scanned in to a more traditional document management system, the OCR engines have a tougher time digesting the digits correctly.

Medforce has developed an Add-on that will read the MICR text and apply ABA standards to extract the bank routing number, account number and check number as well use our OCR to read other printed data such as the check amount. The extracted data will populate a form that feeds the Medforce system's database, allowing users to run queries and reports. Further, that information can be attached to the document/check record and also used to help route associated workflows.
